There are literally dozens of diving and boating opportunities in and around Chania – from full PADI scuba diving training to an hour here and there as a taster.
You can hire a boat, large or small, go out on a flotilla sail for a day or a week, take an hour’s sunset trip out to the islands around Chania in the early evening, or see the sea bed in a glass bottom boat.
And the beaches are magnificent! Nearest beach to Pension Lena is Nea Chora, a pleasant stroll of 15 minutes or so from the Pension. It has sun beds and umbrellas in season, and all the usual facilities and some excellent tavernas specialising in fish dishes. The area of the blue beach umbrellas, two thirds of the way down the beach, is nice, as the helpful woman in charge will bring you excellent snacks and fresh orange juice from her family taverna.
There are so many beautiful beaches around Western Crete. Elafonissi with its pink coral sand beaches is a must (take the bus – the services from Chania are excellent), and all around the coastline you can simply park at a beach that takes yours fancy and enjoy a swim.
For advice on all these things, just ask Lena. She’ll make the phone calls for you, organise the taxi or hire car if you want one, or just give you the directions you need.
