Arriving at Chania airport

From the airport you can hire a taxi (around 20 Euros) to take you straight to Pension Lena, or you can hire a car from the many car hire firms operating at the airport.

For a taxi, go out of the arrivals hall and across the road to the taxi rank. Ask the driver to take you to Pension Lena, Ritsou, off Odos Theotokopoulou, in Chania Old Town. If he looks perplexed, tell him it is near the Old Xenia Hotel (it no longer exists, in fact, but they all knew it well). Also, you can give the driver Lena's mobile number, and she can "talk him in": (+30) 69 32829788.

Here is the request for the taxi driver to take you to Lena's, in Greek, so you can print it out to show the taxi driver, or just print this page:

παρεται στο Πενσιον Λενα , θεοτοκοπούλου,ταβελα Χενία. κοντα ετο νάφτικο μυσέυμ. Παλιά Πόλυ Χανιών.

The taxi drivers are pretty reliable, but they all drive fast. You just need to relax! Sometimes you'll find yourself sharing a taxi with other people, going to other places; this is normal, and no, you probably won't get any discount.

Car hire, as mentioned, is available here, and of course at dozens of other places in Chania. You will pay from around 35 Euros upwards per day, good discounts for a week or more. It is worth considering paying extra for full insurance, as otherwise you'll have to pay all the costs of an accident, unless you can prove it is someone else's fault - not always easy. In any case, the excesses (the amount you must pay in a claim) will be high, as much as 600 Euros. And remember that whatever happens, you are fully responsible for the costs of repairing the tyres and underneath of the car, so mind those potholes and rocks!
